Sleep Deprivation Helps With Post Partum Depression

That mother nature I tell you…she is one smart cookie. No one thinks there is anything good about insomnia, but alas, there is. Over the last 40 years, there has been continuous documentation that if a woman stays up at night, or the second 1/2 of the night, depression will lift by the morning. “Sleep deprivation can elevate your mood even if you are not depressed, and can induce euphoria.” As the article states, this is not a magic button because of the mere fact that chronic sleep deprivation is not a desirable long term solution for anything due to the cognitive delays that start appearing after a short period of time. Yet, this finding shows us that depression can be immediately reversed, and there’s something about the sleeping brain that brings on depression. It is believed that sleep deprivation interferes with REM sleep, thereby warding off depression.

Jenny’s Light- A Postpartum Foundation.

As I wipe the tears from my eyes, I feel very compelled to share this website that I just stumbled upon today. Jenny’s Light is a foundation that was created to support women and families that are dealing with postpartum depression. The story of Jenny highlights the importance of identifying, treating and supporting women with perinatal mood disorders and postpartum depression.

I am very happy to learn that such an organization exists. They are doing everything they can to spread the word and support other organizations that assist women and their families with postpartum depression.

Dads Get Postpartum Depression Too? Who Knew?

We all know that postpartum depression can be a serious issue for new moms, but did you know that about 4% of fathers get it too? Dads that are most likely to get some form of postpartum depression are partners of moms that also have the condition- so this would be a relatively easy way to screen for it. If the mom isn’t doing well, ask her how the Dad is doing. Partners of depressed moms are two and one half times more likely to be suffering from some stress or depression.

If you think about it, it makes total sense. Simply the stress and change of lifestyle can have chemical effects on the brain that can lead to depression.
